Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (IRM-KMI) is one of the federal scientific institutes of Belgium. It has the leading role in providing weather and climate services, but it is also the main Belgian focal point for scientific research in meteorology and climatology. About 200 persons in total work at IRM-KMI, at the site in Uccle and in Dourbes. This project will take place at the Meteorological and Climatological research scientific service of IRM-KMI. The research in this scientific service is mostly focused on numerical modelling (upper-air, surface atmosphere interactions, hydrological processes, and model output statistics and data assimilation), fundamental research and impact studies (climate and extreme weather). Currently there are about 20 scientists active in this department. This project will be executed in close collaboration with experts on historical time series and gridded datasets from the Meteorological and Climatological Information service. The IRM-KMI has a long-standing expertise in delivering services to end users for weather and climate; both in operational weather forecasting and for ad-hoc specific demands. Since 2011 IRM-KMI has been making an increased effort to create climate services. The Meteorological and Climatological research scientific service has been active over the past years in different atmospheric modelling projects that are funded by BELSPO or the European commission and relevant for this proposal.
