As one of 10 Belgian federal scientific institutes, the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) is a world-class research institute conducting research for more than 180 years. Its key mission includes fundamental research, scientific consulting, collection management, public dissemination and outreach. RBINS’ vision is “Bringing Nature into everyone’s lives”. More than 250 scientists and scientific collaborators work at the RBINS in various disciplines ranging from biology to geology, oceanography to taxonomy and palaeontology to ecology. RBINS successfully participated in numerous EU projects, and other international and national projects. The RBINS also hosts more than 38 million physical specimens in its collections and is an active member of DISSCo (Distributed System of Scientific Collections). The RBINS has a fully equipped molecular laboratory, including physically separated facilities for ancient DNA, and extensive DNA collections providing facilities and expertise for molecular work in countless projects.
